SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The town of South Euclid will be holding its first “Junk in the Trunk” community garage sale event on October 9 at Bexley Park.
South Euclid Community Center Manager Meg Martines said the event will provide a safe, outdoor alternative to indoor community garage sales which are typically held indoors twice a year.
“We usually have a community garage sale twice a year at the community center, but since COVID we don’t have them at all,” Martines said. “It’s a fun outdoor event. (Junk in the Truck is) basically a flea market. If you pre-register, for $ 10 you can park your car in a parking spot, then you get the spot next to (your car) to set up a table and sell items. You can also sell items in front of and behind your car.
The Saturday event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bexley Park, 1630 Wrenford Road. It has not yet been decided which of the park’s parking lots will be used for Junk in the Trunk.
“It’s our very first (Junk in the Trucnk), and we’re doing it as a pop-up because we really weren’t sure we were going to be able to do it,” Martines said. The idea seems to have already caught on with residents because, Martines said, just a day after registration opened, 20 people signed up for spaces to sell their items.
Registration for the event closes at 4:30 pm October 7th. To register, residents must go to the South Euclid Community Center, 1370 Victory Drive, pay their $ 10, and complete a brief application.
The Junk in the Trunk concept has grown, with cities such as Mayfield Heights, Richmond Heights and Rocky River holding them since last year when the pandemic began.
“I think it will be fun,” Martines said. “The weather is going to be good or bad. We have tried to make it really profitable for the supplier, because every little bit of money is helpful, especially for people who are not working, or their whole life has been turned upside down by COVID. It will provide a bit of fun and hopefully a way to make some money. And they’ll be safe and on the outside – a safer alternative to an indoor garage sale.
In addition to sellers, Martines said she also encourages buyers looking for bargains to participate.
