Renesas and Panthronics Introduce New Space-Saving, Space-Saving Design for Secure Mobile Point-of-Sale Terminals

GRAZ, Austria & TOKYO – (COMMERCIAL THREAD) – Panthronics AG, a factoryless semiconductor company specializing in high-performance wireless technology, and Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a leading provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, announced today hui a new design that provides manufacturers of secure mobile access point contactless payment terminals (mPoS) with a new way to reduce the size and cost of nomenclature of their products without compromising performance or security.

The companies present the new mPoS design at the Panthronics booth 5.2 B041 at Trustech (Paris, France, November 30-December 2, 2021).

The design is based on the Panthronics PTX100R NFC Reader IC for contactless communication, and the Renesas RA6M4 General Purpose Secure Microcontroller (MCU). The RA6M4 MCU, featuring an Arm® Cortex®-M33 processor with TrustZone technology and integrated security IP, performs all of the cryptography, key management and other security functions required to comply with the strict security standards of the payment card industry (PCI) and EMVCo. Level 2 standard for contactless payments. EMVCo Level 1 compliant software runs in the PTX100R.

This secure MCU-based design offers substantial cost and size advantages over conventional mPoS terminal designs. Today, mPoS terminals feature either a combination of a general-purpose MCU with a discrete secure element, or a PoS-specific system on a chip (SoC) with built-in security features. The Panthronics / Renesas solution is superior to both:

  • It eliminates the need for a discreet secure element by implementing secure payment functions inside the RA6M4. This reduces BOM costs and saves space on the board. It also increases security, as the vulnerable communication path between a discrete secure element and the host MCU is also eliminated.

  • The RA6M4 is a less expensive component than a dedicated SoC and is widely available without any security of supply issues.

Markus Vomfelde, European Senior Manager for MCU Business Development at Renesas, said: “Security, cost and size are the main concerns of manufacturers of the next generation of mPoS terminals as they battle for market share. in a highly competitive market. By proving that a standard MCU-based mPoS terminal can fully comply with all relevant security and payments industry standards, Renesas and Panthronics have demonstrated a new way for terminal manufacturers to gain an advantage. competitive while meeting customer demand for safety, functionality and performance. We are confident that with this solution, mPoS terminal manufacturers can achieve a BoM cost savings of at least 10% compared to typical designs in production today.

Comprehensive design supports rapid development of new products

The mPoS solution implements a full set of payment terminal functions, including EMVCo Level 1 and Level 2 ready software. This means that it provides an efficient platform for terminal manufacturers to verify the concept’s compliance with the EMVCo standard and to complete the rapid integration of the design based on the hardware and software components provided by Renesas and Panthronics.

The design includes a space-saving antenna that surrounds the display screen, a configuration that is only possible thanks to the robust connectivity performance of the PTX100R card reader. The PXT100R’s unique sine wave architecture offers the industry’s best sensitivity and transmission strength, increasing the signal-to-noise ratio of the terminal and allowing reliable pairing with payment cards or mobile phones in all conditions. use, and via an antenna placed near a noisy display.

The solution consists of two cards:

  • EK-RA6M4 Evaluation Kit for RA6M4 MCU

  • PTX100R reader / display shield card

The design is expected to be available for purchase from Renesas as a full evaluation kit in early 2022. Customers who wish to begin design immediately can contact Renesas sales directly.
