The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has launched a donation campaign to support the victims of the huge forest fires in Greece.
The archdiocese will hold a second drive on Sunday at its more than 500 churches across the United States to raise funds to support those affected.
Those who wish to make a direct donation can do so on the Archdiocese’s website.
“May God, the Comforter, through the Holy Intercessions of the Virgin Mother of God, whose sacred Dormition we will be celebrating in a few days, bring prompt help to the Greek people and put an end to this terrible hell which continues to devastate our Ellada”, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America said in his message.
Below is the message from Elpidophoros:
My very dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Even now that I speak to you, fires are still ravaging Greece. And when this horror is over, thousands of our Greek brethren will be left without their homes and possessions.
It is for this reason that I call on each parish of our sacred archdiocese this Sunday to make a special collection for this purpose – on the very day we celebrate the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos.
I also invite anyone who wishes to make a direct donation to do so by visiting our Archdiocese’s website.
An account of all funds raised for this purpose will be made public, so that every person of good will can see how their generosity has produced positive results on the ground in Greece.
May God, the Comforter, through the Holy Intercessions of the Virgin Mother of God, whose sacred Dormition we will be celebrating in a few days, send prompt help to the Greek people, and put an end to this terrible hell which continues to devastate our Ellada.
His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros
