Don’t waste this letter from the IRS about your third dunning check. Here’s what to do with it

There are several reasons why you should keep this letter from the IRS confirming your dunning check.

Did you receive a letter signed by President Joe Biden regarding your third stimulus check? You will want to keep this letter from the IRS, as you will need it if you think you received the wrong amount (calculate your total here) or if you I have no payment at all.

If you’ve lost the letter – or haven’t received it – we’ll tell you where to find a copy so you can claim any missing money through a IRS payment trace. Also, if the IRS ignored the fact that you had a new baby or earn a dependent when calculating your total payment, you may be eligible for more. Additionally, if the IRS based the amount of your third stimulus payment on your 2019 taxes, but you made less money in 2020, you might be entitled to more money. Keep in mind that if you have recently moved or changed your primary address, it is advisable to notify both the IRS and the US Postal Service.

The last day for filing your taxes this year has passed, but if you have requested a tax extension, you can always claim a recovery rebate credit when you file your tax return if you miss a stimulus payment. Why do I need to keep the IRS letter I received regarding my dunning check?

The IRS letter that arrives about 15 days after your third dunning check, confirming your payment, is officially called Notice 1444-C. Signed by the president, the letter indicates the amount that was paid to you and how you were paid (mail or direct deposit). The letter also advises you to check the Get my payment tracking or call a phone number at the bottom of the letter if you haven’t received your check.

Along with the first two stimulus payments, the IRS also mailed a confirmation letter within 15 days of your payment being paid – Notice 1444-A and 1444-B. These two letters could help you claim the missing stimulus money on your taxes this year.

If you think you received the wrong amount, for example if a dependent was ignored – or the total does not match the estimated amount of our stimulus calculator, it could indicate that you need to search for your missing money using this letter. The IRS advises you to hang on to the letter for your 2021 tax records. What this really means is that it’s useful if you need to claim any missing money in the future, such as you might on your 2020 taxes as a recovery rebate credit for the first two checks.

Does the IRS have my current home address on file?

The IRS would have sent a notice to your last known address with information about your payment. You should notify the IRS and USPS if you have moved. The IRS must independently have your correct information on file.

What can I do if I lost the IRS letter or never received it?

If you don’t have the IRS confirmation letter, you should be able to find the information in your federal tax account, using the IRS website.

If you don’t have an account with the IRS, go to the agency account page and press the blue button that says Create or view your account to begin. You will need to have some information on hand to set up your account, including tax and financial information, as well as an email address and cell phone number to receive activation codes. For married couples filing jointly, each spouse will have to log into their own account.

Can I find my IRS account information online?

The IRS online registration process can take approximately 15 minutes. During the setup process, the IRS will send you an email first and then text you two activation codes. If the codes do not arrive, the agency will send you a letter with an activation code, which may take five to 10 days to reach you. If you want to follow the letter, you can use this free service from the USPS.

Once you have set up your account online with the IRS, you can check your account for the information in the notice. If your dunning payment information is not available when you check out, the IRS said it should be in the coming weeks.
