NEWPORT NEWS, Go. – The Atlantic 10 Conference commemorates its 45e Anniversary in 2020-2021, starting with the unveiling of a commemorative logo as a revelation for the celebration of the year.
The anniversary logo will be used in the 14 member institutions during the year 2020-2021. The celebration will include incorporating anniversary elements into championships, apparel, digital and social media.
“Since 1975, the Atlantic 10 has proven that academic and athletic excellence is an achievable goal, a philosophy that has led the A-10 to nearly five decades of success,” said Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “From the Duquesne team that won the first league title to the historic Dayton-led last year, to all the academic records and milestones that have been set, there is a rich history to recognize. I salute every team, student-athlete, coach, administrator and our great alumni and fans who made the Atlantic 10 among the best in the country. “
Founded as a basketball conference on March 2, 1975, the league began with eight schools, including founding and current members Duquesne, George Washington and Massachusetts. Other founding institutions included Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Villanova, and West Virginia. A year after the idea of a basketball-centric league was conceived, the A-10 hosted its first regular season and men’s basketball tournament, with Duquesne winning the very first championship. Known at the time as Eastern Eight, the conference began to grow with new members and in 1982 was renamed Atlantic 10. Since then the conference has grown into a league of 14 institutions and 21 sports which is universally hailed as one of the best. conferences in the country.
The league’s achievements have continued in recent years, with several top 25-ranked teams in multiple sports, led by men’s basketball Dayton reaching third place last season. Historic numbers of NCAA nominations and Sweet 16 (or better) appearances in men’s football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s lacrosse and baseball and a pair of basketball titles. NIT men’s ball over the past decade has shown the prowess of the conference.
