Just days after announcing a historic agreement with LVMH for Champagne Armand de Brignac, rapper-magnate Jay-Z, who is also co-owner of D’Ussé cognac, is auctioning off a rare liquid.

A limited edition bottle of D’Ussé 1969 Anniversary, dubbed “Bottle No. 1” debuts online at Sotheby’s March 1. This is the first bottle of a small bottle of “ultra-rare” Grand Champagne cognac, made from a single barrel aged in the famous cognac house, Château de Cognac. The collection amounts to just 285 bottles, delivered in faceted diamond crystal decanters and a luxury leather case.

Jay-Z himself already has a special Anniversary bottling, which was introduced to him in December 2019 as a 50th surprise gift from Ussé cellar master Michel Casavecchia.

The liquid was deemed too special to be stored internally and is now sold to cognac fans. “Now shiny gold with brilliant reflections, the cognac in each bottle of the 1969 Anniversary limited edition has rich aromas of fresh walnuts, hazelnuts and candied apple, and an aromatic profile that reveals incomparable power: woody at the start, with a long finish of stewed fruit, a touch of leather and a cigar box, ”Casavecchia said in a statement. The house does not specify the age of the liquid itself, except to say that it is over 30 years old. (The “1969” in the name refers to Jay-Z’s year of birth.)

Bottles designed for auction usually arrive decked out in flashy gear and it’s no different; Bottle n ° 1 has 24k gold leaf around the neck and bears the engraved signature of rap legend who became Emperor Jay-Z. The top of the bottle is stamped “No. 1”, in recognition that this is the first bottle made for this collection.

Can you afford to own this D’Ussé collector’s bottle? There is no reserve for auctions in this auction lot, so the auction for bottle # 1 opens at just $ 1.

Auction opens at 9 am ET on March 1 on Sotheby’s rare wines and spirits; the winning offer will be announced on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 9 a.m. ET. The proceeds of the auction will benefit the Shawn Carter Foundation, which supports students with grants, scholarships and entrepreneurial workshops.

While the opening entry is low, executives at Sotheby’s are hoping offers will climb by the thousands. The auction house is cautiously optimistic that some collectors will shell out between $ 25,000 and $ 75,000 for this particular collector’s item.

They might be right.

Cognac typically presents a blend of young and old spirits, which combine to give layers of texture and aroma. Single barrel cognacs are rare in the industry, in part because the more cognac ages, the more valuable it becomes. The rarity of this style of liquid makes the Anniversary rare by definition.

Additionally, cognac collectors, like whiskey collectors, are loyal. At elite cognac galas like La Part de Anges, for example, collectors deposit up to $ 40,000 for unique trophies such as Rare traffic jams Hennessy, Martell and Remy Martin. At the La Part de Anges gala in 2018, collectors spent $ 340,000 overnight.

For collectors who can’t catch bottle # 1, there will be an additional 284 (unsigned) Anniversary bottles hitting the market in May for $ 10,000. As usual with super premium spirits, these bottles will be distributed to elite sellers in key markets. (If you know, you know, as they say.)

As for Jay-Z, in a statement, he said this about the special liquid: “After this barrel is emptied, there is no way to recreate the liquid. The whole process behind the 1969 Anniversary collection reminded me of why I got involved in the spirits industry in the first place – to create something that will stand the test of time.
